Woman Sues Hospital Over Cancer Misdiagnosis

A New York woman is suing the hospital that misdiagnosed her with cancer, causing her to endure two years of in-home hospice care and become addicted to morphine.

The lawsuit alleges that Ramona Jimenez, an 85-year-old grandmother from Long Island, was diagnosed with cancer at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and informed she had only two months to live. She went home to in-home hospice care for two years, during which time she became addicted to morphine.

Jimenez visited the emergency room at Brookhaven with a severe stomach ache in November 2008 and underwent testing. She was told she had stomach and lung cancer, but that she was too old to undergo chemotherapy.

According to the lawsuit, doctors told her she had only two months to live and sent her home with prescriptions for several drugs, including morphine to help her deal with the pain.

In May 2010, Jimenez's family took her to Stony Brook University Hospital for testing and was told there was no evidence that she ever had cancer.

Doctors at Stony Brook took Jimenez off of all prescription medication except morphine, for which she is undergoing treatment to wean her from the painkiller gradually.

Brookhaven has not commented on the lawsuit.
