9/11 Toxic Exposure Settlement Deadline Monday
Approximately 10,000 workers are expected to sign on to a settlement with New York City on Monday over exposure to toxic materials at Ground Zero.
Attorneys expect a last-minute rush to accept the settlement on Monday, which is the deadline to receive compensation under the Zadroga bill.
The Zadroga bill will provide $7.4 billion to police officers, firefighters, and emergency crews who were exposed to toxic materials while responding to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
The bill was passed in the U.S. House last week and will move on to the Senate next month.
In order for the deal to move forward, 95 percent of plaintiffs must sign on; to date, only 85 percent of the plaintiffs have agreed to accept the settlement.
Workers who do not accept the deal will have to file individual lawsuits against the city, which may not be resolved for years to come.
