Girl, 11, Killed in Amusement Park Fall
An 11-year-old girl was killed when she fell from a Ferris wheel while on a school outing to an amusement park at the Jersey Shore on Friday, police officials said.
Abiah Jones, a student at PleasanTech Academy Charter School in Pleasantville, N.J., was attending an 'Education Extravaganza' with thousands of other students. The event, sponsored by Morey's, is held each year at the amusement piers at Wildwood.
Investigators say Jones was alone in a car on the Ferris wheel, when she plummeted over 170 feet to her death.
The wheel, which showed no signs of mechanical failure, had passed a safety inspection on March 17.
The park was closed following the incident. State officials are currently investigating the cause of the accident.
