Worker Dies in Fall at Conoco Refinery

A worker fell 45 feet to his death at a ConocoPhillips refinery in Wood River, Illinois, Tuesday afternoon, a refinery spokesperson said.

Bradley Edmund, a 38-year-old contract employee, was performing routine maintenance on a large tank at the refinery when he fell from a metal scaffold.

Edmund was an employee of Matrix Service Industrial Contractors Inc., an international company that has been contracted to perform maintenance at the refinery for years.

This is the first death ever reported at the Wood River facility.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the refinery's own safety investigators.
